Mission-style chair
Quartersawn white oak

Unkown
Notes
This chair was designed by a friend, and I helped him construct it. I am not sure what finish he applied to it because I didn't help with
the process. The photo was taken in my shop in Tucson prior to the finish being applied. My friend had leather cushions made for it.

Three book cases
Red oak
Stain, wax
Unknown
Notes
In retrospect, these should have been numbered, but I have never gone to the trouble of actually numbering the things I made for
myself, and by the time I formalized the numbering system, I didn't feel like going back and counting these. The cases have glass
doors, and the two tall cabinets have green stained glass panels at the top. All three cabinets have lights in them. I sold these to get
enough money to make my work bench, which is another thing that should have been numbered and wasn't.

This is probably the third chair I made. It is based on plans from a book. It wasn't that comfortable, which I'm sure wasn't the fault of
the plans.

Daybed with curved legs
Cherry
Watco oil, wax
April, 1997
Notes
The daybed was inspired by a piece made by Arroyo Design in Tucson. I'll note here (in case somebody feels like suing me) that I
never sell anything that I have attempted to copy from another designer, or that is largely based on somebody else's design, and I try
to give as much credit as I can: when in Tucson, buy things from Arroyo Design; they make really nice stuff.

Notes
This piece is a reproduction of a 1920s Lifetime Furniture Company design. A store in downtown Tucson kindly let me take
photographs and detailed measurements. Because I was living in an apartment at the time and had no shop space, this was made for
some friends on their back porch.

My intention was to be self-deprecating and a little ironic when I numbered this desk. I thought the person I gave it to would think it
was funny. The real joke was on me because I'm still counting.

September, 1998
Notes
This is the first chair I made for somebody else, but it was not the first time I realized that chairs are, by far, the most difficult things
to make well. The chair was made to match a desk (catalog number 004).

The first chair I ever made is on the right, and the second is on the left. Both were made from plans I found in a book, and neither
have entries in this catalog. Both were originally upholstered with 1" cushions, but they have since been reupholstered with 2"
cushions and are much more comfortable.

Display cabinet on stand with glass
shelves
Walnut, black limba
Watco oil, wax
December, 1997
Notes
This project was overly ambitious considering my skill level in 1997. The inspiration was the cabinet work of James Krenov. The
proportions ended up being wrong; the base is too large for the cabinet. The lesson learned was that getting proportions correct
before I start cutting is critical to any project's success. Periodically, I relearn this lesson.

Hall table
Cherry, curly maple, ebony
Watco oil, wax
December, 2000
Notes
This is the first time I used "live edge" lumber, which means that at least one edge of a board retains the same shape as the outside of
the tree; the board is, however, very much dead. These boards often come with the bark still on them. I removed the bark from the
quilted maple and textured the edge with a small carving knife. The "legs" are actually more like picture frames, with 45 degree miter
joints reinforced with ebony splines.

The doors are bookmatched, as are the drawer fronts. The cabinet is not pictured hanging on a wall because I've never gotten

functional.

Writing desk with file drawers
and a pencil drawer
Mahogany, quartersawn
maple, maple veneer

May, 2000
Notes
In my opinion, this desk is one of the better looking things I've made. Originally, it was designed for a customer to fit a specific
alcove in her house, and it was designed to be lower than most standard desks in order to fit her. However, a measuring snafu
related to the alcove left me the proud owner of a desk too short for me to use comfortably and, frankly, too expensive for me to
own. My Mom, who, coincidentally and serendipitously, is not especially tall, needed a desk, or at least told me that she needed a
desk, and purchased this one from me. The drawer pulls--and much of the metal hardware I use--were purchased from
Misugi
Designs. They offer really great stuff.
